michelle obama. chris matthews? >> certainly made the connection, don't you think? i mean, so much of tonight was interactive. it was between her and that audience in the room. i thought the camera work was so important watching this on television. you saw on the faces of men and women, black and white, all different backgrounds, the connection. she was with people. the emotional connection, telling the story of her love affair with her husband. with her life of getting ahead. but there was one big difference than four years ago which just came through in the earlier speeches tonight. it was hope and change, yes, hope and change but not hope and change imaginally overnight. but hope through work and patience and time and effort and then change. i think it was a much more mature look at their own lives as they got there. i'll tell you, i assume most americans watching tonight who have been lucky in this country, have gotten close to the american dream, have done it the way they did it. with student loans. with good parents who made them study. of being parents who make their kids st

for barack obama right now. one is as michelle was just saying look at his popularity right now. part of that is a product of how the republicans have treated bill and hillary clinton for the past few years. where they treated them for villains for 15 years. and started in 2008 saying he was the good democrat and now barack obama is the bad one. and bill says the policies he wants to implement on tax rates for rich, that's what clinton enacted in 1993. he can say i did that. every single republican in the house, every republican in the senate in 1993 said exactly what every single republican today is saying. and look what happened in the 1990s. look how the deficits came down. didn't harm the economy to have those higher tax rates. that's all barack obama wants to go back to now. and the other reason is simply there's a contrast here between what happened under bill clinton and under george w. bush. it's hard for barack obama to be explicit about saying that. when he invokes bush, it's easy for the republicans to say he's blaming the predecessor. that doesn't apply to clinton. >> mich

back america and make sure that we remain the hope of the earth. >> first lady michelle obama and mitt romney were campaigning today in virginia. and with only 54 days until the election, we have a new nbc/"wall street journal"/marist poll of that state and two other crucial battleground states, florida and ohio. joining me now to take us through the numbers is nbc political director and host of nbc's "daily rundown," chuck todd. what do we have to know about this poll? >> part of me wants to call these states the iron triangle of the battleground, if you will. it feels like all of the ways to 270 all go through these three states first. but let me start in virginia. this is where the president is sitting at a five-point lead. 49-44. ohio, his lead is a couple of points higher, 53 to 43. florida, on identical, 49-44, to what it is in virginia. all of these three states have the president sitting at 49 or 50. all of them have his job approval sitting at 49 or 50. and all of them for the first time since we've been polling in these swing states have the right track/wrong track above 40%.
